New ARC cylinder technology helps to increase life by 25% or more

Milwaukee Cylinder is proud to announce its new patent pending ARC (Automatic Recirculating Cylinder) Technology.  ARC Technology is designed to increase cylinder life by 25% or more and is available on selected rod and bore combinations of the Milwaukee Cylinder H-Series (3000psi) hydraulic family of cylinders.

MIlwaukee cylinder ARC cylinder technology“The problem with traditional cylinders is that, depending on hose length, oil from the cylinder never makes it to the power unit,” said Joe Logue, Senior Product Engineer at Milwaukee Cylinder.  Since the piston is a dead-end flow path, over a cylinder cycle, oil simply goes from inside the cylinder, to the hose, and back into the cylinder – never making it back to the power unit to be filtered and cooled.   “Oil in the cylinder can become stagnant because it does not get flushed out,” added  Logue. “Over time, stagnant oil breaks down, potentially decreasing the life of the cylinder. This is like never changing the oil in your car.”

ARC solves this problem by utilizing a patent pending technology that allows the piston to be by-passed when the piston reaches the end-of-stroke on the side where ARC is installed.  When not at the end-of-stroke, ARC closes, allowing the cylinder to achieve full force and speed.

Milwaukee Cylinder marketing states that ARC offers several benefits over traditional cylinders. These benefits include:

  1. Increasing cylinder life by removing stagnant oil;
  2. Better hydraulic performance by removing trapped air;
  3. Allowing operation of cylinders in higher temperature environments by creating an end-of-stroke recirculation of cool oil.

“ARC is certainly a fresh look at making cylinders perform better, and we are excited about introducing our customers to this new technology,” noted Douglas Lacina, President of Milwaukee Cylinder.

Milwaukee Cylinder has created a 90 second video to explain how ARC works and they offer a design guide to assist engineers in developing solutions that incorporate ARC.  Both resources are available on the Milwaukee Cylinder website.
