Telehandlers rely on battery powered hydraulics

The Manitou Group, with North American headquarters in West Bend, Wisc., is a long-time manufacturer of equipment like telehandlers, lift trucks, loaders and work platforms. Recent R&D and commercialization efforts have included electrification of numerous models.

This includes the introduction of new electric rotative telehanders that are offered in six versions. The MRT 2660e, for example, is part of the recently announced VISION+ range and has a loading capacity of 13,000 lbs, a lifting height of 85 feet and a maximum outreach of 71 ft.

The 100% electric MRT 2660e is viewed as a versatile tool for handling operations with zero emission, low noise levels and reduced fuel consumption. This model performs as well as similar internal combustion models and even allows simultaneous boom movements, thanks to intelligent hydraulics. The 700 V/65 kWh lithium-ion battery ensures optimum use of these models, even in cold climates, according to company officials.

If needed, customers can add a second 700 V/65 kWh battery to boost the range by an additional four hours. Users also have a third option with a hybrid version of these models that serves as a range extender.

Several charging mode options are available. An on-board 11 kW charger permits charging in 4 hours 30 minutes, and an on-board 22 kW charger brings recharging time down to just 2 hours 15 minutes. An even quicker solution is available to users with another on-board charger that allows charging in less than an hour — although the charging source must be 400 Vac. These options offer wide flexibility to operators according to their needs.

The MRT 2660e has a 107 kW drive motor; the electric motor driving the hydraulics is rated at 84 kW. The hydraulic pump is a fixed displacement piston type that offers 46 gpm flow. System pressure is rated at 5,076 psi.

The MT 625e compact lift truck is designed for rough-terrain and suited for work on confined job sites.

Manitou is also adding to its range of compact lift trucks with the commercial launch of its first 100% electric compact telehandler. The MT 625e, with a capacity of 5,500 lb, a lifting height of more than 19 ft, and a maximum outreach of 11 ft, reportedly matches the size and performance of the company’s internal combustion version but with lower noise and zero emission.

Fitted with a 25 or 33 kWh lithium-ion battery, this model reduces maintenance costs by 56% and significantly lowers the total cost of ownership for the user, according to company officials. With a 13 in. ground clearance and quick combined hydraulic movements, the MT 625 e is suited for rough-terrain and a first choice for work on confined job sites requiring low emissions, such as urban areas, renovation of historical buildings, and indoor applications.

The unit is designed with lithium-ion battery storage and an on-board charger. Users also have the option to add additional batteries for more autonomy on site. Electric drive motor power is 14 kW and hydraulic motor power is rated at 25 kW. The hydraulic pump is a gear type with flow of 21 gpm. System pressure is 3,408 psi.

To make it easier to get started and to support the transition to electric machines, a dedicated training course is available for operators as an option. This training is delivered by an expert from the Manitou Group at the customer’s work site, so users gain a complete understanding of the machine’s operations and capabilities in a familiar environment with specific applications and attachments.
