Using pressure regulator assemblies for industrial applications

By Mary Gannon | October 4, 2023

Accurate, repeatable pressure regulation for applications like testing industrial products and processes, running fountains, or controlling the temperature of saturated steam can be easily achieved with the right pressure regulator assembly. A Proportion-Air QBX proportional electro-pneumatic pressure regulator piloting a Burling Valve BD4 pressure reducing regulator is an ideal combination to meet the demands of these applications.

Assemblies are typically used when the flow requirements for an application are higher than a standalone pilot electronic regulator can achieve, but the accuracy requirements are within range for the pilot. The pilot in these cases is often a product like the QBX series, which offers a flow rate of up to 1.2 scfm – adequate for many situations. Pairing the QBX with a dome-loaded regulator expands the possibilities for accurate, repeatable control at higher flows.

For applications that have accuracy requirement of ±5% full scale, a single-loop QB1X model with an internal sensor for feedback can provide ideal performance. For greater accuracy, using the two-loop QB2X model with an external feedback device like a transducer offers ±0.5% accuracy.

The dome-loaded BD4 pressure reducing regulator includes a bottom return spring for proportional band control. Designed for closed-loop feedback, it’s a perfect partner for Proportion-Air’s QBX. The BD4 has a diaphragm for better response and more precise pressure or vacuum control than a piston-type regulator.

BD dome-loaded pressure regulators provide accurate pressure control of most industrial gases and liquids. All BD series valves are non-relieving. These heavy-duty quality casted valves offer 1/2 to 2 in. threaded ports and flange options from 1/2 to 8 in.

Back pressure and vacuum solutions are available as well, using the BD6 dome-loaded regulator.

The versatile combination of a Burling Valve regulator piloted by an electro-pneumatic regulator can be modified in numerous ways to meet the most demanding applications. Options include customizable pressure ranges, materials, command and monitor signals and more. Nearly any pressure unit of measure can be specified, including psi, bar and inches of water column, among many others. Options for vacuum control, vacuum through positive, absolute, and standard pressure models are available.
