Vacuum plus vision system automates bin picking

Schmalz Inc. has developed a complete system for the complex task of automated parts handling. The Vision and Handling Set 3D-R is a complete solution that includes all accessories for efficient box- and bin-picking with lightweight robots and cobots, and is among the latest innovations from Schmalz, Raleigh, N.C. Compared to conventional handling devices on the market, it can be put into operation quickly — without extensive previous knowledge of robotics and in less than half a day.

The Schmalz Vision and Handling Set 3D-R uses vacuum and a 3D camera for automated bin picking. The system attaches to lightweight robots and cobots.

Users are supplied with all the necessary components, including the connection interface consisting of a flange and cable suitable for the specific type of robot, such as  Universal Robots. Other key components include the electric vacuum generator ECBPi, a gripper with an extension for connecting the appropriate suction cups, and a 3D camera system and software.

The sophisticated control system ensures smooth coordination of all components and is key to successful implementation, said the company. This allows the device to be set up and controlled easily and perform bin picking smoothly and collision-free.

The smart camera with integrated 3D image processing includes a projector for structuring surfaces for a better depth image. The camera has a 1.3 megapixel resolution with depth measurement range of 0.2 to 1.0 m (7.9 to 39.4 in.) and a depth resolution of 0.04 mm (0.002 in.) at 0.2 m and 0.9 mm (0.035 in.) at 1.0 m.

For mounting, the camera can be connected statically or on the robot end-of-arm flange using the supplied holder. Envelope of the unit as installed on the robot arm is 304 x 151 x 341 mm (12 x 6 x 13.4 in.) and it weighs 2.57 kg (5.6 lb).

An intuitive user interface leads technicians step-by-step through the installation process for fast commissioning. Once up and running, software for automatic gripping point calculation ensures “smart” detection with simple and fast output of the next gripping point. Part-presence monitoring enables safe and energy-saving handling of parts and prevents collisions between the gripper and box.

Application-specific software modules let the system recognize rectangular, ordered workpieces as well as randomly shaped, unsorted workpieces. The BoxPick module detects rectangular surfaces and calculates the gripping point based on predefined workpiece sizes. This module enables robots to pick ordered articles from a pallet or box. The ItemPick module calculates the next gripping point for randomly shaped, unsorted workpieces within a load carrier. This module is used for bin picking.

The ECBPi vacuum generator provides gripping system suction capacity of 12 l/min with 75% maximum vacuum. The unit’s VEE gripper includes an extension for connection with various types of suction cups. It’s designed to pick up workpieces weighing up to 2 kg (4.4 lb) and as small as 30 × 30 × 15 mm (1.18 × 1.8 × 0.59 in.).
