Valve-to-cloud interface simplifies IoT

By Ken Korane | August 16, 2019

The CPX-IoT gateway from Festo, Hauppauge, N.Y., is paving the way for secure connections to the cloud. That, according to company officials, will enable machine designers, system builders and end customers to significantly improve their overall equipment effectiveness.

Festo’s IoT gateway connects field devices to the cloud.

The new IoT gateway connects components and modules from the field level, such as the company’s CPX/MPA valve terminal, the MSE6-E2M energy monitoring module, and various handling systems to the Festo Cloud via an OPC UA interface and Ethernet connection.

Transmitting information to the cloud opens the door for users to readily process and monitor the data. This, in turn, enables the set-up of trend analyses and early warning notifications, as well as automatic alerts in the event of incidents. The IoT gateway connects the cloud to a controller and ensures that the relevant information is communicated in the right format at the right time, said Festo officials.

The CPX-IoT gateway makes it possible to have preconfigured dashboards for each Festo component — with additional customization. The dashboard is viewed in a web browser and includes diagrams and traffic lights. Specific widgets include user-interface components and graphs for energy monitoring and preventive maintenance, as well as key performance indicators for the process and for the improvement of overall equipment effectiveness.

Widgets are designed to provide an additional layer of clarity for the user. The condition-monitoring feature, for instance, improves error diagnostics and fault identification, creates transparency regarding energy consumption, delivers clear information in a graphical format and offers historical data.

The ready-to-install CPX-IoT gateway provides machine builders with a turnkey solution for the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0, one that can also be used in existing systems. Other benefits include a simple connection of the proven Festo controller and CPX automation platform to the cloud via a standardized communication protocol.
