Voith and Kudelski partner on IIoT cybersecurity

The convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) paves the way for production efficiencies, new business models and data intelligence to drive predictive maintenance and better decision-making. However, this convergence also presents mounting cybersecurity and business continuity challenges that must be strategically addressed using targeted services and technologies.

Voith and Kudelski will develop new products and services to help ensure the digital security of industrial operations.

To meet that need, global firm Voith and the Kudelski Group, a leader in digital security, are partnering to deliver new solutions to secure connected technologies for industrial markets in North America. The partnership will reportedly combine Voith’s in-depth knowledge of OT and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) with Kudelski’s expertise in hardware- and software-based cybersecurity, with the goal of delivering tangible cybersecurity products and services for industrial and power-generation markets.

The Voith Group, with U.S. headquarters in York, Pa., offers a broad portfolio of components, systems, services and digital applications in energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials, transport and automotive markets. Its industrial capabilities include providing actuator-test systems and hydrodynamic couplings for “smart” belt conveyors, to name just two examples. The company’s Voith Digital Ventures Div. is developing new offerings for the digitalization of mechanical and plant engineering and driving IIoT adoption.

The Kudelski Group, based in Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland and Phoenix, Az., provides cybersecurity systems focused on helping companies assess risks and vulnerabilities and protect their data and systems.

The Kudelski/Voith partnership will reportedly provide end-to-end products and services, using the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to deliver secure connectivity across entire business operations. “This partnership will bring added protections to Voith’s customers,” said Michael Rhodes, senior vice president sales North America, Voith Digital Ventures. “Both Voith and Kudelski have deep expertise in IIoT systems, and bringing the two companies together in a partnership strengthens that knowledge base. With Voith’s unique expertise in OT and Kudelski’s dominating cybersecurity experience, this team will deliver world-class cybersecurity offerings to businesses as they embrace digitalization and automation.”

The partnership will leverage the Kudelski IoT Security Suite, a comprehensive set of services and solutions designed to make IoT security easy to embrace. The Kudelski Group has more than 30 years of experience designing software- and hardware-based security systems, as well as deep cybersecurity expertise through its advisory consulting teams and managed services that are delivered through Cyber Fusion Centers in the United States and Switzerland.

“As companies around the world seek the benefits of connecting their OT systems to their enterprise IT infrastructure, the focus must move from air-gapped, physical security to a holistic, end-to-end, security-by-design approach,” said Jean-Michel Puiatti, senior vice president of IoT security at Kudelski. “Voith is driving digital innovation across many different industries, and we look forward to supporting customers in achieving their long-term objectives with device and data protection, access management, active security and managed services that will help them create sustainable growth and success.”

The goal of the Voith/Kudelski partnership is to support customers with their digital transformation journey and reliably protect their industrial environments from new and emerging cybersecurity and physical security threats. Initial offerings will center around advisory services and managed security services, with further expansion planned in the future.
