Intermat looks to the future

Intermat, the largest construction equipment show in the western hemisphere this year, opened today at Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition center. Held every three years, the event is being billed as the Sustainable Construction Solutions and Technology exhibition.

“Focusing on the unavoidable issue of low carbon for the construction industry, the 2024 edition aims to constitute a showcase for the excellence of the sector in the race to net zero,” according to the show organizers.

The show will host around 1,000 exhibitors, 70% of them international, offering information and expertise revolving around construction materials, equipment and solutions for major worksites, public works and the building industry.

Five clusters of expertise are designed to facilitate the construction projects of tomorrow.

New technologies and energies. New in 2024, this exhibition area looks to address broad environmental shortcomings through technology advancements. In France, for example, the building and public works sector is one of the most polluting, in particular the building sector which accounts for nearly 45% of domestic energy consumption and contributes 20% to greenhouse gas emissions, according to Ecologie.gouv.

And infrastructure construction accounts for 3.5% of CO2 emissions in France, per the European Commission. Today, France is following a National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC) which aims to achieve net zero by 2050 in order to combat climate change. The Major Investment Plan for the construction sector provides for €20 billion, including €7 billion for the development of renewable energies.

To speed up decarbonization, several high-growth topography, engineering, and automatic systems areas have gained attention. Among them:
BIM. The building information modelling (BIM) market was estimated at $8.9 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $23.2 billion by 2026, with an average 17.6% growth over the forecast period.

3D printers. The 3D printer market in the construction industry was estimated at $3.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach $40.1 billion by 2027 (CAGR 29.5%).

IoT. The IoT market in the construction industry was estimated at $7.7 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $18.7 billion by 2027, an annual growth rate of 14%, according to Mokosmart.

The other clusters of expertise on display at Intermat are:

Earthmoving, demolition & transportation, which includes machinery, equipment, accessories, and components such as hydraulic parts and subsystems; and machines dedicated to recycling and the environment.

Roads, minerals & foundations, such as accessories, components and equipment for building roads, infrastructure and foundations, as well as machines for the minerals industries.

Lifting & handling is devoted to parts, vehicles and new technologies for manlifts and material handling.

Building, civil engineering & concrete industry. This hub at Intermat 2024 includes accessories, components, parts for building construction, formwork and scaffolding, site equipment and tools, and materials for building and construction. In addition, it features machines for drilling, boring, trenching and special foundations.

It also includes the World of Concrete Europe event, which showcases the entire value chain in the concrete industry, from upstream to downstream. Areas of interest are plants and equipment for concrete production, precast concrete, and special and decorative concrete; and equipment for delivering, placing and handling ready-mixed concrete.

The show puts the subjects of low-carbon and digitalization front and center, said Intermat officials, by involving clients, rental companies, manufacturers of machinery, and financial institutions. And Intermat must offer a platform to young people who are strongly committed to the issues of low-carbon and digitalization, they said.

Ultimately, according to officials, the show aims to address the construction sector’s major challenges through innovative technology developments, as well as incorporating high-performance alternative energy sources to support the global economy and reach net zero to protect our planet.

While Intermat aims to capitalize on its past strengths, the 2024 edition will offer a more comprehensive range of products and services and cover broader themes to better meet the needs of today’s construction companies. And the exhibition itself has been redesigned in terms of range and format, bringing benefits that include reducing the carbon footprint and exhibiting costs for visitors and exhibitors.
